Austria

About the Austrian ancestry I can only say that seemingly they originate from Hungary and came to Austria after 1945. However, I can not ensure this information.

Poland

There are people with the surname “Wabel” living in Poland. Unfortunately nothing is known about the origins.

Russia

Due to the active recruitment by Katharina the Great it is likely that many Wabels seized the opportunity to find their fortune in Russia. Unfortunately I do not have more precise information at present.

Switzerland

About the Swiss Wabels I can say with much certainty that those people living to date in Switzerland are descendants of the Wabels who migrated from Büsingen a.H.

In the book of surnames of Switzerland one can find the following entries for the surname “Wabel” :

• Canton of Schaffhausen, Neuhausen am Rheinfall – 1916 D
• Canton of Zuerich, Niederhasli 1923 D
• Canton of Zuerich, Zuerich 1906 D (Is identified)
• Canton of Zuerich, Zuerich 1923 D

The naturalisation of Gotthilf Wabel 1909 in Schaffhausen, Kt, Schaffhausen is not mentioned but this can be proved.

Hungary

Sopron (Ödenburg) and the surrounding area. At that time when parts of Hungary belonged to the Austria-Hungary a number of families from Southern Germany moved to Hungary. The surname “Wabel” also occurs in Filipowa / Batschka. In August 1765 a Peter Wabel from Höningen at Frankental registered in Vienna to settle in the hamlet mentioned previously. In the “Ortssippenbuch” of Palanka in Batschka a Theresia Wabel is listed, unfortunately more precise information is missing.

USA

It is ensured that a part of the Wabels living to date in the USA originate from Herborn / Haiger, Hesse. They partly emigrated to the USA before the declaration of independence in 1776. It is likely that families from other parts of Germany can be found there, too.
