During my research I found a few meanings and interpretation of the Family name Wabel. I have to admit that on the list below I did not make a difference between the regional characteristisc and the different regional dialects used in German speaking areas. Also the interpretations mentioned below might not be complete. Also I would like to mention the different writings I found. It started with Wabell, Wybel, Wabbel, Waibel, Waybel, Wabl and Weibel.
Located meanings
Occupation: Waibel proved in Billingen, developed out of the occupation Weibel „Bailiff“or “Usher”[1]. The Weibel was not always a district executive, he could also be a privately hired executive of the local judge or reeve.
In the book “Büsingen a. H., Eine reichsdeutsche Insel in der Schweiz” from 1938 you can read that the executives of the local lord of the manor are named “Hirt”, “Forster”, and Waibel[2]. During the 16th and 17th Century the name Weibel was also a military rang.
