About the origin of the Family Wabel
You will find the first records about the villager of Büsingen in the local church records starting around 1615. Three years later Europe faced one of the most difficult times of violence and destruction in its history that should last unbelievable 30 years.
The area of Schaffhausen should not be excluded of it. In 1633, some of the frontier villages where looted and destroyed, by fire. Büsingen got lucky, but like the villages of Barzheim, Buch and Doerflingen it got completely looted by more than 8.000 men of the Weimar cavalry.[1][1a].
During those years you find the first people with the name Wabel in the church records.
The first entry starts with the marriage of Hans Wabel and Barbel von Ow on February the 29th in 1629[2]. However there are no further records or any kind of information left about them. So it is not sure if they moved away or died of the plague, which also caused a lot of death in the area at that time.
In the year 1631 on January the 9th we find another Wabel in the church records. Konrad Wabel who married Elßbeth Huser[2]. But unfortunately a few years later his wife died and Konrad got married for a second time. He married Magdalena Heller on the 29th of November 1634. [2] Together they had five daughters Margreth, Katharina, Elsabeth, Anna and Margaretha and one son Andreas. Andreas married on the 29th of November 1663 Barbara Wüger from Schaffhausen. There children where born in Büsingen, but in the records is a note that Andreas and Barbara lived in the nearby city of Schaffhausen. Because there is no more information in the church records left, it looks like that this line settled in Schaffhausen or moved elsewhere away.
Another line starts with Heinrich Wabel and Margarethe von Ow with there marriage on the 26th of August 1632. In 1701 this line was still living in Büsingen, but after there are no more information left.[2]. Maybe they left Büsingen to settle down somewhere else.
The Wabels still living today with roots from Büsingen can be tracked down to Dionysos Wabel and Ursula Günthardin (Güntert). They got married on the 13th of August 1637 in Büsingen a. H. and they are the founder of the today living Wabels and from this line are the following descended:
Hans Konrad Wabel, reeve and Stabhalter (village judge)from Büsingen(24.06.1753 - 14.02.1814), Otto Wabel (16.11.1896 - 12.05.1972) former mayor of Büsingen and owner of the German Federal cross of Merit and the Swiss painter Henry (Heinrich Jakob) Wabel (18.02.1889 - 17.01.1981)[3].
